Vino Rouge Red Wine Tasting December 3, 2015

Well, this tasting was the Swan Song for Ray F. as the Vin Rouge scribe, who has been keeping the records of the club since it first began. In exchange for his 20+ years of impeccable record keeping, the club was very pleased to make him an Honorary Member and cover his dues with a lifetime membership. Congrats to Ray and thanks for all of your hard work over the years!

WE ended our 21st year with a fabulous lineup of wines and a great festive Prime Rib dinner at the Valley Country Club. Every December, the club has a “show-off” tasting, where most of the members each bring a mystery wine that they think will blow the socks off of everybody. The preference poll is a special one for this tasting, as the top four wines earn the owning members a bye for the following year’s December tasting.

The event was kicked off with a bottle of Mumm Brut Rose Champagne (Pinot Noir juice, of course) provided by Ray Harrison. All twelve members were present for this celebration.

For this show-off tasting, we spread the preference points pretty evenly across all of the entries, so there was no landslide victory. Rather, we liked them all and commented that they were all winners! But, in fact the preference winner was the 2009 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva provided by John Benevides. Thanks John for sharing this terrific wine that has absolutely NO Cabernet Sauvignon. By the way, 4 of the other wines were Cabernet or Cab Blends.

Second place in the preference poll went to the 2003 Tikal Jubila Malbec & Cabernet Sauvignon Blend from Mendoza which was provided by Tom Clarkin. Third place ended in a tie between the 2004 Rafanelli Terrace Select Cabernet provided by Ray Frechette and the 2008 (Long Shadows) Pedestal Merlot Blend from Columbia Valley provided by Don Oldmixon. What a great lineup! Congratulations to John Benevides, Tom Clarkin, Ray Frechette and Don Oldmixon for winning a bye for the Christmas 2015 meeting.

Thanks to the Valley CC staff for preparing a delicious meal for us and providing excellent service. Dinner included Mushrooms and Cannellini Beans served over Garlic Crostini; Mesclun Greens with Candied Walnuts and Dried Cranberries with Balsamic Vinaigrette; Roast Prime Rib of Beef served Au Jus; Horseradish May on side; Lyonnaise Potato and Sauteed Broccolini; Dessert off the Menu; Cappuccino or Expresso. Marvelous!

The paragraphs following the photo provide a little more insight into each of the wines tasted this evening, including suggested drinking date ranges.
